Ann Summers launches online bingo site

Friday, July 6th, 2007

High street underwear retailer Ann Summers is launching a new ‘sexy bingo’ site later this month in an attempt to capitalise on the ban on smoking in public spaces.

The move comes in response to predictions that the smoking ban would signal the end for traditional bingo halls.

AnnSummersBingo.com will offer cash prizes as well as giving players the chance to win some of the signature items sold by the brand.

The company developed the site in partnership with St Minver, which has previously worked with Virgin Bingo, Littlewoods Bingo and Yahoo! Games, and currently operates the world’s largest online bingo network.

“Ann Summers’ timing is perfect,” stated St Minver CEO, Jim Ryan, “With the smoking ban set to drive bingo players out of the halls and onto the online sites, it will benefit from the exodus.”

Annsummers.com now counts 1.2m unique users a month. The retailer is hoping to attract customers to the new site, which goes live on 13 July, via a scratch-card giveaway in its 134 nationwide stores offering the chance to win credit to use online.

Ryan added, “Players are drawn to the offerings of brands that they know and trust, plus the player demographics could not be a better fit.’

“We know from our Ann Summers’ Parties that our customers like playing bingo but when they see the fabulous prizes we have on offer and hear our delicious caller, not to mention our outrageous new number nicknames, they’re going to love it,” said Jacqueline Gold, chief executive of Ann Summers.

‘Chips were flying’ says Tony G

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Source: Tony G Blog

‘I over reacted and chips were flying but there were no chips flying at the dealer’s face’, said Tony G.

Yesterday I played the Omaha high low and it started out pretty boring so it took me a long time to get going but eventually I got going. With about a hundred players left, I got up to about 12,000 in chips after starting with 4000 so I was feeling pretty good. 80% of the field was gone and I was well into the tournament, I just couldn’t win a hand from there on. I busted out again so I’m running deep in every tournament and playing good.

There was an incident yesterday on the table when I played the hi/lo. A dealer made a terrible mistake and my hand was killed so I tried to clear it but I over reacted and some chips were flying but there were no chips flying into the dealer’s face. I saw some comments on 2+2 which are untrue and I’m sorry people feel they have to do that but they do it without the facts. We’ve got all the facts and I’m sure there’ll be a post about what Tony G does. Obviously I over reacted and I gave the dealer a $1,000 tip so he was pretty happy. But anyway, let’s move on from there. Obviously I feel bad and things happen sometimes. But chips flew off the table, not anywhere else.

Today I’ll be playing the $5K six handed NLH and it’s a very strong field with some of the players. I know after the first level I’m well in the game…I’ve got $27K and I started with $10K. I was at a very nice poker table and my table just broke. I’m getting moved to a new one. I’m going to get right into this tournament, it’s my game and I’m feeling very strong. But I’m checking out, I’ll be back later today with my progress in the $5K buy-in.

Rank fears smoking ban will hit Mecca bingo club profits

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Source: Telegraph.co.uk

Casino and bingo club operator Rank has warned that the smoking ban coming into force next month is likely to hurt profits in the second half of the year.

The owner of Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casino said it had seen a “solid start” to the year with 5pc growth in like-for-like sales in the 25 weeks to date. Operating profits also rose, helped by cost-cutting.

However, the impact of the smoking ban, which comes into force in public places in England from July 1, is “likely to hold back profit performance in the second half of the year”, the company said.

In the 25 weeks to June 24, Mecca Bingo grew like-for-like sales by 1pc, though admissions were down 5pc despite a 7pc increase in spend per head.

In Scotland, which has had a smoking ban since last year, Mecca Bingo’s like-for-like sales were down 10pc since the start of 2007, though the company said the rate of decline had slowed and it was starting to see signs of recovery. In Wales, which imposed a smoking ban in April, Mecca’s sales fell 5pc.

Rank’s Grosvenor Casino chain grew sales by 4pc and said admissions were down 1pc, though it said they had returned to growth since the start of the second quarter.

The group’s Spanish bingo clubs business, Top Rank Espana, saw sales rise 3pc in the period.

Earlier this month, bingo operator Gala Bingo said it expected to close a dozen of its clubs with the loss of hundreds of jobs if the smoking ban in England has a similar impact on trading to the ban in Scotland. Rank said earlier this year it would close nine of its bingo clubs but it is understood that no further closures are planned.

The shares rose 6¾ to 187¼p.
