Budget 2007: A 50% raid on gambling profits

A new 50% tax on the profits of larger casinos will reverse years of favourable treatment for the gambling trade.

Industry analysts are now predicting a huge slump in investment in new and existing sites and said Britain’s first super-casino in Manchester could end up looking ‘more like a big shed full of gaming machines’ than a Las Vegas-style palace.

Casino operators reacted with dismay, claiming the Chancellor’s crackdown will undermine the economic regeneration which other ministers have used to justify a huge expansion in casinos.

Mr Brown, who was raised as a Presbyterian – a church which fiercely opposed gambling – also announced a 15% tax level for on-line gambling operators. Betting and poker website bosses have already indicated they will never relocate to Britain if faced with such taxes, since foreign countries allow them to operate with low or zero duty levels.

Since Mr Brown’s tax grab looks set to keep all operators away, it has made a nonsense of the Government’s efforts to introduce tougher rules to regulate the fast-expanding online gaming sector. Tessa Jowell had hoped to make Britain the capital of internet gaming, attracting websites to base themselves here. That ambition now appears to be holed below the waterline.

The industry had expected the Chancellor to offer a generous tax level to lure operators back to the UK but he has taken the opposite approach, effectively banishing website operators.

Currently UK casino ‘yields’ – their takings minus the winnings they pay out – are taxed in bands ranging from 2.5per cent for the first £500,000 up to 40% over £ 5million. The Chancellor has axed the lower bands completely and casinos will now pay taxes starting at 15% rising to 50% on any yeld over £10million.

The Treasury predicts the changes will bring in almost £100million extra in taxes over three years, with the new top rate ensuring ‘that this vibrant sector continues to make a fair contribution to tax receipts.’

Gaming analyst Warwick Bartlett said: ‘The 50% band seems to indicate the Government is altering its stance on gambling. It won’t bring in a huge amount of tax but it effectively puts a cap on capital investment in casinos.’

Former Celebrity Big Brother babe, Danielle Lloyd, is to join Ladbrokes Poker as the new face of their hugely popular poker business. Danielle caused a stir on Celebrity Big Brother recently with Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty.

Liverpool based Danielle is the former lover of West Ham United and former England star Teddy Sheringham. Sheringham is the face of Ladbrokes’ online poker rivals VC Poker.

Danielle and Teddy split up in February. Now the friction between the two is sure to increase as they both try to gain a share of the ever increasing UK online poker market for their employers.

The UK press have quickly picked up on the story this morning. The Daily Star wrote, “The battle  between the pair will be one of the industry’s most compelling contests.”

An industry insider also commented, “Dani’s appearance on the poker scene will really raise the stakes, but there’s no way Teddy is going to fold and let her and Ladbrokes take the jackpot. This will be some game.”

Danielle is in good form on the gambling front right now. The gorgeous model attended Cheltenham Racecourse last week, picking out three winners in the process. With £10,000 profit from the races in her purse, Danielle looks set to take the poker world by storm. She now faces playing in a string of celebrity poker games later this year.

Danielle was taught how to play poker by Teddy in 2006. His deal with VC Poker is one of the highest profile poker-celebrity affiliations around. Dani is sure to be a big hit with male poker players. If she can eclipse Teddy’s success remains to be seen.

Gala Bingo sweet on Nectar

Gala Bingo have announced a new partnership with the Nectar loyalty scheme in a response to minimize the effects of the impending smoking ban due to affect bingo halls in England and Wales.

The new partnership, which is thought to run for three years, will allow Gala Bingo members to rack up Nectar points every time they enter one of Gala bingo’s 170 clubs. It is said to be the first deal of its kind with a Bingo operator.

“When we talk to our members they tell us they really want to be rewarded for their loyalty so we’ve joined forces with the biggest and best rewards scheme in the country to give them what they are asking for,” said Kate Howe, Gala Coral Group marketing director.

Nectar has announced they will also be extending their services further into the leisure-based industry.

“Nectar will be extending its instant swipe technology to a range of leisure-based rewards in the next few months to make it even easier for collectors to redeem for rewards,” said Brian Sinclair, Nectar managing director.

Gala will hope the new service will diminish the effect of the upcoming smoking ban and be sufficient enough to persuade their smoking customers to return to their halls.

The smoking ban, due to be introduced on July 1 in England in Wales, is already in operation in Scotland and has drastic efforts on bingo halls there. According to Gala chief executive Neil Goulden, up to 46 per cent of Gala customers are smokers, illustrating the potential threat of the new ban.

In preparation for the smoking ban, the U.K’s second biggest bingo operator Mecca Bingo, run by Rank Group Plc, has announced it will close nine of its club, losing up to 230 jobs in the process.
