UK Poker Clubs Association Files Suit

The UK Poker Clubs Association (UKPCA) is prepared to go to war over an unsuccessful legal challenge by the British Casino Association recently, filing suit against the government’s upcoming legislation.

The new Gambling Act, primed to begin this September, may force poker clubs out of business according to the UKPCA, which represents 720,000 poker players in the UK, as well as 13 clubs.

The legislation hinders poker clubs from making money according to the UKPCA, which launched a High Court challenge on the matter. The all sides of the issue will be heard by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) making a final decision in July.

Riva opens UK’s first automated bingo club

UK bingo hall operator Riva Gaming Group has opened England’s first fully electronic bingo club in Sutton, London. The club features 582 new personal handheld terminals specifically designed for the club and 20 further portable terminals for use in the external smoking area and presents players with an electronic version of the traditional paper bingo ticket.

Simon Hannah, CEO of Riva said: “We are operating in a challenging environment but we believe there is still plenty of room for growth for operators who provide unique and exciting facilities.

“The Riva club in Sutton we believe is amongst the most leading edge in the UK and in its opening week has traded beyond our expectations,” he added. “Sutton provides our players with an exciting new bingo challenge and we are delighted with the number of players, both new and traditional, who are enjoying playing a part in the evolution of bingo”.

Riva said that it would continue to grow both its AGC and bingo divisions organically, announcing that it had completed the purchase of the Hippodrome Bingo Club in Lowestoft for an undisclosed sum. The Sutton experience it said would help determine the pace of the rollout of electronic clubs.

House about that – man wins £50,000 at bingo club

A LUCKY city man is celebrating after scooping a £50,000 win in a city bingo club. His success came at Gala Bingo, in Westfield Road, Westwood – the same venue which saw £100,000 and £200,000 winners last year.

On Monday, June 4, the city man told his wife he was “feeling really lucky” and they should play bingo that night.

It proved to be one of the best decisions of his life, as he won the national bingo prize of £50,000 after completing a full house in 42 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 500 clubs playing nationwide.

The lucky man, who has asked us not to name him, said: “My wife has already compiled a list of the shoes and handbags that she’s going to buy now.”

The financial advisor added: “It’s spooky how it happened as we never go on a Monday.

“I was completely shocked when I was told I had won, and I couldn’t speak for ages. I’m still in a bit of a daze actually.”

He intends to use the money to treat his two sons and his wife’s family, while a celebratory holiday has also been pencilled in. The Westfield Road club has proved extremely lucky for the man before, as he also has a £5,000 win to his name in the past.
