PR team cashes in on betting boom

THE nation’s renewed appetite for gambling has allowed RMS PR to cash in with a new six-figure account.

Staff from the Altrincham agency have been hired to promote The UK Bet Show 2007, which will be held at the Birmingham NEC in September.

The event – which comes as debate rages about Manchester’s supercasino – is expected to attract over 200 of the gaming and betting industry’s biggest names as well as 25,000 visitors.

The show is being organised by north west entrepreneur Julian Bewley, managing director of Fifth Street Events, who has over 10 years’ experience arranging national leisure, sporting and education events.

He said: “The gaming and betting markets are among the fastest growing in the country and show little sign of slowing down.

“It is essential businesses and organisations can effectively interact with consumers to understand their attitudes and habits.

“The UK Bet Show will provide a new platform on which to achieve this, enabling companies to successfully develop and market products and services tailored to audience demands.

“We consulted a number of agencies and picked RMS PR because of their unrivalled network of contacts and excellent knowledge of the gaming and betting industries.

“Their input has already secured support from a range of key stakeholders including politicians, sponsors, the media and punters.”

RMS PR has developed a two-tiered communications campaign including a regional road show tour.

Andy Poole, who is heading up the account, said: “The popularity of gaming and betting in the UK is booming, and while consumer interest is escalating, so are expectations and opinions.

“Therefore, everything about the PR campaign needs to be carefully planned and acutely delivered for it to be a success.

“We’ll be focusing on tackling social issues surrounding gambling and achieving transparency with potential exhibitors and consumers.

“The road show tour will take The UK Bet Show to the people on the street and enable them to sample a little bit of Las Vegas.”

The UK Bet Show will be split into four themed areas – a seminar theatre, live stage, poker zone and sports bar.

It will cover all types of gaming and betting including online, casino, sports, interactive, lotto, bingo and financial.

Visitors will be able to find out more about all the different types of games and bets available in the UK, how to play them and about responsible gambling.

Blair calls Manchester casino decision a ‘pity’

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Prime Minister Tony Blair called Manchester’s selection as a destination for the UK’s first super-casino a “pity”, adding that it was a justified decision, albeit a disappointing one as it was at the expense of Blackpool’s regeneration plans. Speaking in the commons, Blair went on to defend his party’s casino policy, insisting that the developments would bring ‘much needed investment and regeneration to some of Britain’s regional cities’.

Blair told the House of Commons that new proposals would be carefully prepared and issued after the May 3 elections. “What we have to do is look very carefully at this issue,” he said, “and recognise that in a world where there is online betting, where there are huge opportunities for people to bet, that casinos are not something that are against the proper norms of society but can, in places like Blackpool and Manchester, bring much needed private investment in (and) regeneration that will provide jobs and higher living standards.”

New homes plan for bingo club

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Source: Lancastertoday.co.uk

THE former Gala bingo club in Lancaster could be turned into homes and shops.

Tenders have been invited for the King Street site and building which is now up for sale.

Agents Colliers CRE have had talks with Lancaster City Council on possible uses.

The company felt a mixed use but predominantly residential development would be “acceptable and suitable”, according to sales literature.

Any proposal would be subject to formal planning permission.
Strong interest is expected in the site which lies in a conservation area and is available freehold.

Closing date for bids is mid-June. A next-door shop is also included in the deal. But Colliers associate director Sam Frankland declined to indicate a guide price.

Sellers are a joint venture set up by Gala, which owns the freehold, and a company called Left Bank Developments, which has a long lease on part of the four storey building. Bingo ceased on the site in February after 35 years. Gala cited “commercial reasons”.

Until August last year the art deco building also housed the now closed Regal cinema. Independent chain Northern Morris was the last operator, running alongside the bingo club for three years. The building first opened in 1936 with 1,592 seats.

Since then it has passed through a number of hands, including Star, Cannon and ABC and had a dual role as cinema and bingo club from 1971.
