American group Las Vegas Sands Corporation says it is interested in building Manchester’s planned super casino.
The company says it is willing to invest as much as £390m in the project – that is 50% more than a competitor has said it would spend.
But it also says it would only be interested if it was also allowed to build shopping malls and housing as part of the development.
Sands is a builder of mixed-use developments where the casino is only part of the revenue model, and it can get back its investment by selling off assets like retail malls and apartments.
“If we are not allowed to exercise our business plan, then we won’t pursue it,” boss William Weidner said.
Britain’s Casino Advisory panel earlier this month named the Manchester as its surprise choice to host the country’s first Las Vegas-style super-casino.
Sands currently operates the Venetian resort and the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas.
It also runs a casino in Macau, the only part of China where gambling is legal, which opened in May 2004.
