Eighteen MPs have signed up to a Commons motion expressing “surprise and regret” that the Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) ignored Blackpools submission for the UKs first supercasino, despite the northern seaside town being many peoples favourites to win.
Since last Tuesdays announcement that CAP would recommend Manchester to the government, shock turned to anger and now anger has materialised into action.
The Commons motion, led by Fleetwood and Blackpool Norths MP Joan Humble, calls for the decision to be analysed scrupulously by the same committee that oversaw the draft Gambling Bill. The motion is also backed up by a petition which has been set up by the Blackpool Gazette. More than 2,000 readers signed up to the campaign to push for the government to further examine Blackpools case before the final vote on the decision is made.
Blackpool is widely seen as requiring urgent regeneration, with the once-foremost seaside town seeing a dramatic loss in local investment and tourist visits dropping by seven million over the past 15 years.
If Blackpool fails in their effort to overturn the recommendation, it will be necessary for it to seek other methods of attracting investment and encouraging regeneration since the government has announced that there will be only one super-casino during their current tenure of Parliament.
