Stanley Leisure plc, the UK’s largest casino operator has announced its intention to bid to become operator of Manchester’s super-casino.

The Liverpool-based firm, which was acquired last year by Malaysian gaming giant Genting in a £639 million deal, said that it was surprised by the decision to build the casino in Manchester, but thought it stood an excellent chance of successfully bidding for the licence.

Stanley’s finance director Michael Riddy said, ‘I think a standalone UK casino operator might struggle to compete against bidders from say, the US, but our position now as part of a multi-national group is a very strong one. Genting recently won a £3 billion casino project in Singapore so the merger with ourselves is a good combination.’

Stanley Leisure is the largest casino operator in Great Britain with 41 provincial casinos and four in London, including the prestigious world-renowned Crockfords in Mayfair.

Gaming giant Ladbrokes also announced its intention to bid for operation of the super-casino shortly following the government’s decision.
