UK banks caught up in gambling inquiry

Furthering their investigation into the online gaming industry, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has demanded evidence from companies in London that have had dealings with online gambling companies. Among those caught up in the inquiry include HSBC, JP Morgan, Investec and Deutsche Bank.

It has also been revealed that subpoenas were sent out to at least 16 banks as far back as October, just days after President Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act. The DOJ is said to have instructed the companies to hand over all documents, e-mails and telephone records relating to online gambling companies.

Analysts speculate that the DOJ is targeting the individuals that founded the companies and anyone that has benefited from the industry, much like NETeller founders Stephen Lawrence and John Lefebvre who have been charged with money laundering and face a maximum 20 years in prison.

The move by the U.S has not gone down well with many in the UK, believing that the U.S is wrongly targeting firms out of desperation as they seek to step up their crackdown on internet gambling.

“There is growing suspicion that the US Department of Justice is using its muscle in a highly unpleasant manner, and is targeting financial institutions beyond their own shores in a way that cannot be justified. I hope the Department will stop and review its approach so that its behaviour doesn’t sour relations between us,” said Alan Duncan, Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary.

As a result, shares in many online gambling companies fell. PartyGaming fell by nearly ten per cent and 888 was down by three per cent.

Approval for 90 new casinos, with more in the pipeline

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

By Marie Woolf - Source: http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/article2171674.ece

A vast casino building plan, which could lead to 90 new casinos being built within years, has already been approved, despite assurances from ministers that expansion would be limited.

The plans, which could result in the equivalent of 10 Las Vegas-style super-casinos, have provoked an angry reaction from opposition politicians.

A document from the Gambling Commission, the casino regulator, obtained by Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, shows that, in the past two years, 90 new casinos have been approved and a further 57 applications are being considered.

The revelation comes a week before the announcement of the location of Britain’s first super-casino.

Casino industry insiders believe there will soon be more than 200 casinos in Britain, double the number when Tony Blair became Prime Minister in 1997.

Richard Caborn, the minister responsible for gambling, has echoed doctors’ concerns that new gaming laws liberalising access to casinos could lead to a rise in addiction. His view contrasts with the official position of his department. Tessa Jowell, the Secretary of State for Culture, has said in the Commons that the new Act would not cause an increase in problem gambling.

Gran’s £100,000 Bingo Joy

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

A grandmother has scooped £100,000 at a Wolverhampton bingo club. The 81-year-old plans to buy new carpets and treat her family with the cash she won at Gala Bingo, in Bushbury Lane.

The mother-of-four and grandmother-of-seven, who did not want to be named, thought she had won £50 but ended up with the top prize of £100,000.

She said: “I was stunned when it finally sunk in how much I had won and my family were absolutely flabbergasted. My grandchildren are already wondering how much they’re going to get.”

The widow has been playing bingo six times a week for 21 years at the Gala club and won the six-figure sum on Friday.

She is not the first player to walk away with a fortune from the Bushbury Lane club. In 2003, a 29-year-old woman scooped a £201,000 windfall and other players have gone home with up to £50,000.

The latest winner triumphed in the National Bingo Game after completing a full house in 36 numbers - the lowest in any of the 500 clubs nationwide that were playing the game.

Over £1 million is played for every week in the game, the second biggest in the country.
