Woman wins £200k on bingo

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

(Source:http://www.timesandstar.co.uk/news/viewarticle.aspx?id=444540)

A WORKINGTON woman has scooped over £200,000 on the bingo.

Valerie Hargrave, of Moss Bay, won the National Bingo Game while playing at Opera Bingo in the town centre last night.

Graves Cumberland, the firm which operates Opera Bingo, confirmed they had a £201,000 winner last night. Mrs Hargrave was not available for comment this morning.

The game is the country’s largest bingo game and involves halls around Britain linking up.

Opera Bingo and Graves Cumberland are no strangers to big cash winners. The Workington club is said one of the luckiest in the country.

In the last eight years, the group’s three clubs in Whitehaven, Workington and Penrith have paid out over £2.3million to national game winners.

And last year, the then manager of Carlisle’s Gala Bingo club Marc Goodwin, of Whitehaven, won £81,000 at Workington’s Opera Bingo. He was the 18th big-money winner for Graves Cumberland.

Other big winners at Opera have included pensioner Jean Steele, who scooped £101,000 at the Gaiety in Whitehaven on her 80th birthday.

A month earlier, Anita Matravers was the first big winner at the Workington club, taking home £42,000.

Six days later Keswick grandmother Barbara Hinde won £101,000 at the Penrith club.

Charlotte Kennedy, marketing manager for Graves Cumberland, said: “It’s great news, congratulations to her.”

UK’S RED BRICK ROAD GETS GALA AD ACCOUNT

Friday, December 15th, 2006

GBP 8 million adspend envisaged
Marketing media reports this week indicate that the UK advertising  agency Red Brick Road has landed a lucrative GBP 8 million account to promote the on and offline operations of the Gala Coral betting group.

One report suggested that Red Brick landed the account after impressing the gaming company with its first-round pitch.

The contract will see the agency working with Gala’s entire business, encompassing its Gala Online gambling brand as well as Gala Bingo, Gala Casinos and Eurobet. The account will additionally embrace strategic work to be overseen by Red Brick Road strategy director David Hackworthy.

The project represents the second time that Gala has reviewed its advertising in the past year since its acquisition of Coral Eurobet for GBP 2.18 billion. The Red Brick appointment will not affect the GBP 7 million direct marketing account held by Tequila, or MediaVest Manchester’s handling of the media planning and buying.

PartyGaming says poker recovering

Friday, December 15th, 2006

By Peter Harrisson Source:http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlebusiness.aspx?type=businessNews&story =2006-12-14T114238Z_01_WLA6519_RTRUKOC_0_UK-PARTYGAMING-TRADING.xml

LONDON (Reuters) – PartyGaming said on Thursday poker revenues were recovering after being hit by the United States ban on Internet gambling and it was in talks to buy smaller companies that could not cope with the ban.

Daily online poker revenues have recovered to $721,000 (366,000 pounds) after falling to a daily low of around $637,000 after the ban in October.

“Bolt-on deals are very interesting right now,” Mitch Garber told reporters. “We’ve had a chance to see how some of the smaller guys are dealing with — and in some cases cannot deal with — the lack of liquidity, after what happened in the U.S.”

Garber declined to comment on the progress of discussions to buy either smaller rival 888 Holdings (888.com) or part of Austria’s bwin.com, which he said were both stable businesses after the U.S. ban.

“There are a number of organisations out there that have a lot of skill and expertise, but after two months of not having U.S. business have become quite attractive, so those discussions are ongoing,” he added. “We’re looking to add expertise and accretion to our existing business.”

PartyGaming said it had been hit by the defection of some of its bigger gamblers outside the United States to privately owned poker Web sites that were ignoring the ban and allowing players to compete with U.S. rivals.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank said a drop in overall daily revenue to $921,000 was worse than expected and they cut their forecast of 2007 core profit by 10 percent to $133 million.

But PartyGaming’s volatile shares were up 1.8 percent to 28-3/4 pence by 8:34 a.m. British Time, having swung between a loss of 3.5 percent and a 5-percent rise.

“Overall yield per active player day has been affected by the loss of higher-raking players, but this has been partially mitigated by strong levels of new player sign-ups that have averaged over 1,400 per day,” said PartyGaming.

The group now takes 67 percent of its revenues from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and 27 percent from Canada and Central and South America.

As a result of the U.S. ban, PartyGaming has cut 945 jobs, or 41 percent of its workforce, mostly in India.
